Dr. Lorcan Byrne

My research focuses on an urban sociological study of Limerick City, but the project transcends the particularity of any one city and reaches out to universal markers characterising the contemporary western city and contemporary life. Broadly I am applying twin approaches to this study, a historical sociological component that examines Irish (and Limerick’s) modernity, and an ethnography. Both of these elements are woven together through an analysis of politics, social policy, religion, economic life, the symbolic world and cultural practices in Ireland and Limerick city.
